In the second episode of "The Express Way with Dulé Hill," the PBS series explores the transformative power of music in Appalachia, shining a light on the region's artisans and musicians who foster healing and positivity within their communities. Hosted by Dulé Hill, the episode highlights master luthier Doug Naselroad's innovative rehabilitation program for opioid recovery through instrument making, the soul-stirring songs of Grammy-nominated musician Amythyst Kiah, and the genre-bending "Latin-grass" sound of Joe Troop and Che Apalache. Together, these artists reveal how art and tradition can bridge divides, uplift spirits, and renew hope in an ever-evolving Appalachian cultural landscape.

In a mesmerizing performance at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts, Amythyst Kiah returned to her alma mater to celebrate her Appalachian roots. The February 19 concert brought together the rich cultural heritage of the region through Kiah's powerful voice and soulful melodies. With her stirring lyrics and deep connection to the audience, Kiah's performance echoed with Appalachian pride and universal themes of identity, resilience, and belonging. Sponsors and program leaders from the Black American Studies Program and the Crafting Blackness Initiative acknowledged the significance of her return, while Dr. Daryl Carter remarked, "Amythyst not only brought her music but also her message, resonating deeply with everyone here." The night was a testament to the enduring power of roots music, bridging gaps and inspiring all those in attendance.
